Tuuli’s diverse background is a strength in data center projects

There is no single right path to the technical field. Tuuli Lindroos’ diverse background has proved to be a strength in the role of project manager for data center projects.

Tuuli Lindroos has had many stages in her career, and the path to her current position as project manager for data center projects has been far from straightforward.

“I didn’t start my career in the technical field — far from it. I spent the first years of my career in healthcare, where I developed a strong human-centered approach to work and the ability to manage the big picture,” Tuuli says.

Tuuli’s creative side then led her to the world of fashion design, where she discovered an interest in pattern making, which requires technical expertise. Her career path then shifted towards entrepreneurship and projects.

Tuuli noticed that her diverse roles had given her the ability to take responsibility and solve issues quickly. These also became her strengths in the international projects she currently works in as project manager.

“It’s natural for me to take on projects where things need to be driven forward with determination and a solution-oriented approach,” she notes.

The onboarding at Granlund was very effective because I was surrounded by skilled professionals from the outset. They made the learning process quick and motivating.

Broad work experience provides a strong foundation for the data center business

Tuuli made the switch to the technical field when she worked at YIT as a development manager. “At YIT, the technical field opened up to me in a concrete way for the first time, and I realised how much I enjoyed work that combines construction, processes and practical action,” she explains.

When she later had the opportunity to enter the world of data center projects, it seemed that all of her previous experience provided a strong foundation for this new step.

“Moving to the data center industry was surprisingly easy and, above all, inspiring. The onboarding at Granlund was very effective because I was surrounded by skilled professionals from the outset. They made the learning process quick and motivating,” Tuuli says.

In her current role, Tuuli leads a design team for data center projects, from initial concept design all the way to construction.

“My duties include coordinating technical design, ensuring the progress of projects and working closely with customers, designers, the subcontracting network and the authorities. Often, the role also involves project permit issues and, if necessary, environmental impact assessment, which is an important part of the comprehensive management of data center projects,” she notes.

What are the duties of a project manager?

“In short, my job is to make sure that my data center projects are successfully completed. The projects are technically demanding but, in my job, it suffices for me to see the bigger picture and be able to lead and supervise my team of top designers. My job is diverse and I learn new things all the time.”

Why do I like data center projects?

“Finland is a small country – I am motivated by being involved in large, international data center projects. You can be genuinely proud of this work. Taking environmental issues into account also makes the work more meaningful – I don’t have a single site where we do not discuss green shield-moss, frogs or flying squirrels.”

I want to give my strongest encouragement to anyone considering a career change. Entering the data center industry is a good idea, as the industry needs various kinds of professionals, and having a diverse background can be the key advantage that makes this new direction possible and successful.

A dream job that offers the opportunity to influence significant projects

Tuuli feels that her current position is truly a dream job, where she can put her diverse experience to good use and influence significant future-oriented projects.

“My journey has taught me that there is no single right path to the technical field. My diverse background has proven to be a strength, and each previous career stage has equipped me with skills that I can now draw on every day,” she explains.

Data center projects allow Tuuli to combine many of her competencies: accuracy, a systematic approach, and the ability to manage multi-faceted entities. These are the core strengths that have stayed with Tuuli throughout the various stages of her career path.

“I want to give my strongest encouragement to anyone considering a career change. Entering the data center industry is a good idea, as the industry needs various kinds of professionals, and having a diverse background can be the key advantage that makes this new direction possible and successful.”
