Granlund is expanding to the Netherlands through an acquisition. Granlund, which employs more than 1,700 experts, is a Finnish company that also operates in Sweden and the United Kingdom. The goal for the next few years is to almost triple the turnover and expand to several European countries. The acquisition in the Netherlands strongly supports these goals.

Granlund has acquired a majority stake in Smits van Burgst Groep, a company founded in 1946 in South Holland. The main business areas are MEP design and maintenance management services and the net sales in 2025 were about €7 million. In addition, the company specialises in elevator maintenance and management services.

Smits van Burgst Groep employs a total of 50 experts. The customers are mainly public actors, such as the state, municipalities and cities. Smits van Burgst has carried out several school and office space projects, among other things. They also have experience in the data center sector.

Significant growth potential in the Netherlands

“We have known Smits van Burgst for several years through the European FirstQ network, which includes companies specialising in MEP design from all over Europe. We see significant growth potential in the Netherlands, for example, in the fields of MEP design and energy consulting. With Smits van Burgst, we have the opportunity to start advancing the goals together,” says Pekka Metsi, CEO of Granlund.

For Smits van Burgst, the transaction is seen as strengthening the company’s position in the Dutch market.

“As a new owner, Granlund will provide us with opportunities to invest more strongly in the company’s growth and development. The acquisition will also bring continuity as we will move from a family owned business to a broader structure and be able to utilise the expertise of a large group in our operations,” says Steven Mast, CEO of Smits van Burgst Groep.

According to Mast, the real estate and construction industry in the Netherlands is currently emphasizing similar trends as in Finland – energy efficiency and sustainable construction are important themes. The same applies to digitalisation, the utilisation of data and artificial intelligence.

Granlund will provide us with opportunities to invest more strongly in the company’s growth and development.

“MEP plays a very significant role in the real estate and construction industry in the implementation of energy efficiency, sustainable construction and data-driven solutions. We are excited to start developing these areas together with Smits van Burgst,” says Pekka Metsi.

After the acquisition, Smits van Burgst Groep B.V. will continue to operate as a subsidiary of Granlund, under its own name, as part of the Group, and CEO Steven Mast will continue in his current position as CEO of the company.
