In many organisations water consumption data has often been siloed in separate systems. In the worst cases, the data has been retrieved from water invoices, paper notes or spreadsheets and has not been accessible through any management system.

“When you manage dozens or even hundreds of properties this kind of data handling becomes very labour intensive,” says Kari Haahtela, Sales Director at Smartvatten.

The integration between Granlund Manager and Smartvatten automates the reading of water consumption data and brings it into broader property portfolio management, together with other energy consumption categories. The data is easy to find in Granlund Manager, which consolidates all property data and functions as the management tool for the entire property portfolio.

For effective energy management it is essential that all consumption categories across all sites appear reliably and in the correct format in the reports.

“This integration ensures that all meters are always read correctly, which is not at all guaranteed if the same work is done manually,” says Mika Virkki, Solutions Sales Manager at Granlund.

A key advantage of the integration is its scalability. Monitoring and reporting is available at the level of individual properties or on the level of the entire portfolio. The essential goal is the automatic production of higher quality data. The integration makes daily work more meaningful and saves time as routine tasks can be handled through data transfers.

The integration enables higher quality reporting and savings

Water consumption data from Smartvatten can be viewed in the Granlund Manager dashboard in the same view as any other energy consumption data. From the dashboard users can easily move to hourly data and more detailed water consumption reports.

In addition to increasing cost pressure, the tightening requirements for sustainability reporting are a clear trend driving the monitoring of water consumption.

The integration between the two systems enables new ways of combining data, for example for reporting purposes. For effective energy management it is essential that all consumption categories from all sites appear reliably and in the right format in the reports. Deviations in consumption are more likely to lead to action when all portfolio-level data is in one place.

One important outcome of easier data management and informed decision making is savings. Reducing water and energy use, together with saved working hours, ultimately results in more profitable operations.

Manual meter readings are no longer needed. Pen and notebook now have a more efficient replacement.

Only when you know what you consume can you know what level your targets should be set to.

The growing importance of monitoring water consumption

Many organisations have not yet recognised the importance of monitoring water consumption. This may partly be due to water traditionally being a relatively inexpensive utility. This is likely to change. The pressure on prices is a reality today. In The poor condition of national water infrastructure in many countries demands major repair investments and the cost will eventually be paid by the end user.

Alongside price pressure, sustainability and tightening reporting requirements are a strong driver for monitoring water consumption. Monitoring is included not only in voluntary sustainability reporting but also in the ESRS standards of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).

Hot water consumption produces most of the related carbon emissions, which makes its measurement and reporting particularly important. The accuracy of reporting is crucial and the integration between Smartvatten and Granlund Manager provides an easy way to produce high-quality sustainability reporting on water usage.

“Only when you know what you consume can you know what level your targets should be set to,” reminds Minna Tarvainen, Communications and Marketing Specialist at Smartvatten.
